Local stars honoured at The Essex Sports Awards 2008

Sports stars from Essex were awarded accolades at the prestigious 2008 Essex Sports Awards held in Chelmsford on Thursday 6th November.

The Essex Sports Awards, hosted by sportessex, celebrate and recognise the very best in sport within the county and the people who participate, support its provision and invest personally in its ongoing development.

Over 200 guests, including dignitaries, athletes and coaches, attended the event to see who scooped the ten awards up for grabs from the three finalists shortlisted in each category.

Continuing the pathway of recognition from local awards to county - the winners from The Essex Sports Awards 2008 have been automatically entered into the BBC East Region Sports Awards on Monday 8th December and we are pleased to confirm that we have two Essex athletes shortlisted for the East Regional Awards - Daniel Bently (Disabled Sports Personality of the Year) and Abigail Ryan (Young Sports Personality of the Year). We wish them both the best of luck!

Angela Littlewood, director of sportessex, said: “I’d like to congratulate all the award winners and nominees for their achievements, and would also like to say a great big thank you to every single participant, every club member, every volunteer, and to everyone involved in sport in the county.  It has been a fantastic year for sport in Essex with real progress made at all levels of sport in terms of facilities, coaching, participation and co-ordination, and this is due to efforts of all those who have been involved in these awards.”

Chris Perks, director for Sport England East, said: “Thousands of people in Essex and across the region play crucial roles day in, day out, by participating, investing, volunteering and coaching in sport, and they tell us repeatedly that it is extraordinarily rewarding. I hope this celebration encourages more people of all ages and backgrounds to get involved and enjoy the benefits sport can offer.”

Angela Littlewood added: “I would like to thank all of the sponsors of the awards for their generosity, without which this ceremony would not have been possible. Their support of our awards reflects the crucial support so many organisations give to sport in Essex throughout the year.”
